19 apr 2024 · Michael Freedman, American mathematician who was awarded the Fields Medal in 1986 for his solution of the Poincare conjecture in four dimensions. In fact, his result was stronger than the conjecture itself and helped produce the surprising result that ordinary four-space has many exotic differential structures.

Mike Freedman was born in Los Angeles on 21 April 1951, to Nancy Mars Freedman and Benedict Freedman. Ben’s father, David, was born in Romania and emigrated to New York, where he became a major writer of comedy sketches for radio and Broadway shows, in particular, the Ziegfield Follies, Burns and Allen, Eddie Cantor, and Fanny Brice.
