Joseph Antoine Ferdinand Plateau (n. 14 octombrie 1801 – d. 15 septembrie 1883) a fost un fizician belgian, cunoscut în special pentru faptul că a fost unul dintre primii care a studiat iluzia imaginii în mișcare, care ulterior a stat la baza cinematografiei . A observat fenomenul persistenței imaginii pe retină ( remanența retiniană ).
La persistenza della visione è una ipotesi di un fenomeno, che, come nel 1829 da Joseph Plateau nella sua "Dissertation sur quelques propriétés des impressions produites par la lumière sur l'organe de la vue" (nella quale tuttavia non parla esplicitamente di "persistenza retinica"), risulterebbe nella persistenza per circa 1/50 di secondo dell'immagine a livello retinico.
