Jean Paul (born March 21, 1763, Wunsiedel, Principality of Bayreuth [Germany]—died Nov. 14, 1825, Bayreuth, Bavaria) was a German novelist and humorist whose works were immensely popular in the first 20 years of the 19th century. His pen name, Jean Paul, reflected his admiration for the French writer Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

Johann Paul Friedrich Richter, der sich später Jean Paul nannte, kam als Sohn des Lehrers und Organisten Johann Christian Christoph Richter und seiner Ehefrau, der Tuchmacherstochter Sophia Rosina, geborene Kuhn, in Wunsiedel zur Welt. 1765 wurde sein Vater Pastor in Joditz im Hofer Land (seit 1978 Ortsteil der Gemeinde Köditz), 1776 erhielt er eine bessere Stelle in Schwarzenbach an der Saale.
