George Bernard Shaw nacque a Dublino nel 1856 da una famiglia protestante. Nel 1876 si trasferì a Londra, dove la madre insegnava canto. Aderì alla “Fabian Society”, il movimento socialista che influenzò molto i giovani intellettuali inglesi; in seguito pubblicò i Saggi fabiani (Fabian essays in socialism, 1889).
