In 1999, W.S. Merwin was named Poetry Consultant to the Library of Congress for a jointly-held position along with poets Rita Dove and Louise Glück. He has been honored as laureate of the Struga Poetry Evenings Festival in Macedonia, receiving the international poetry award, the Golden Wreath Award.

One of them was a 1,500-page Collected Poems with Library of America, which even as it landed was out of date. A new volume was already scheduled for 2015.
An NEH fellowship to Edward J. Brunner in 1988 to study the writings of W. S. Merwin contributed to his book Cold War Poetry, published in 2000. In 2013, Library of America released 2 volumes of the collected poems of W. S. Merwin, adding to the hundreds of volumes of American literature that LOA has published since 1979 when it received its first NEH grant of $1.2 million.

Buddhista praticante nonché sostenitore dell’ecologia profonda ( deep ecology ), ha vissuto dalla fine degli anni Settanta in una piantagione di ananas alle Hawaii accuratamente riportata al suo stato originario di foresta pluviale.
