So yelled Tubesteak Tracy to 15-year-old Kathy Kohner on a Malibu summer day in 1956, a year before the combined nickname of "Girl" and "Midget" would read in a best-selling work of fiction, and three years before the silver screen made it nationally synonymous with a different American Dream: one of youthful freedom and limitless leisure in post-war lineups.
The television series was based upon concepts and characters created by Frederick Kohner in his 1957 novel Gidget, the Little Girl with Big Ideas, which Kohner based upon the adventures of his teenaged daughter Kathy. The novel was adapted into a 1959 movie, Gidget, starring Sandra Dee, James Darren, and Cliff Robertson.
Kathy Kohner was born Katherine Klara Kohner in 1941, the daughter of European Jewish immigrants Fritzi and Frederick Kohner, a Czechoslovakian Jew who worked as a screenwriter for the German film industry until 1933. She grew up in Brentwood, Los Angeles, and spent much of her childhood on the beaches at Malibu.

A third film, Gidget Goes to Rome, followed in 1963. Gidget Goes Hawaiian has been released to VHS and DVD.
