Rick James (born James Ambrose Johnson, Jr; February 1, 1948 - August 6, 2004) was an American funk and soul musician from Buffalo New York, who worked as a singer, keyboardist, bassist, record producer, arranger, and composer during his long career.
With 1981’s Street Songs, Rick James slapped a rocker’s edge onto disco’s derriere. Inspired by the Buffalo projects where they grew up, he and the Stone City Band explore a thriving subculture of prostitutes, junkies, and hustlers on “Ghetto Life,” while “Mr. Policeman” is one of the first songs to openly address police brutality.
