He was born in Schwerin, the eldest child of the reigning Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Frederick Francis IV, and his wife Princess Alexandra of Hanover, a daughter of Crown Prince Ernest Augustus of Hanover (a first-cousin once removed of Queen Victoria) and Princess Thyra of Denmark, the youngest daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark.

Originally ruling as duke, he was raised to the rank of grand duke in 1815. Prior to succeeding to the throne, he served as Governor of Hanover from 1776 to 1786.

  6. Henry Borwin I was a son of Pribislaw and his wife, Woizlava of Pomerania, daughter of Wartislaw I, Duke of Pomerania. Pribislav was an Obotrite prince and was the first Lord of Mecklenburg. He died on 30 December 1178 of a wound he received during a tournament at the court of Henry the Lion in Lüneburg , and Henry Borwin I succeeded him as Lord of Mecklenburg.
