The Kingdom of Holland ( Dutch: Koningrijk Holland (contemporary), Koninkrijk Holland (modern); French: Royaume de Hollande) was the successor state of the Batavian Republic. It was created by Napoleon Bonaparte in March 1806 in order to strengthen control over the Netherlands by replacing the republican government with a monarchy.
The 17,821,419 million Dutch inhabitants are concentrated on an area of 41,543 km 2 (16,040 sq mi) including water surface, the land surface being 33,895 km 2 (13,087 sq mi). This means that the country has a population density of 526/km 2 (1,360/sq mi). The density of 500 inhabitants/km 2 was reached in the first half of 2014.
In 1815, after Napoleon escaped from Elba, William Frederick raised the Netherlands to the status of a kingdom and proclaimed himself King William I. As part of the rearrangement of Europe at the Congress of Vienna , the House of Orange-Nassau was confirmed as rulers of the Kingdom of the Netherlands , enlarged with what are now Belgium and Luxembourg .

The celebrations started with a reenactment on 30 November 2013 of Prince William Frederick 's landing at Scheveningen, exactly two hundred years earlier, with Huub Stapel playing the role of William Frederick, the later king William I. The reenactment (which is performed every 25 years) drew a crowd of several thousand.
