John Edmund Andrew Phillips (August 30, 1935 – March 18, 2001) was an American musician. He was the leader of the vocal group the Mamas & the Papas and remains frequently referred to as Papa John Phillips.
Il gruppo venne fondato nel settembre 1965 da John Phillips e sua moglie Michelle Gilliam, al quale poi si unirono Denny Doherty e Cass Elliot appartenenti ad un altro gruppo folk americano, i Mugwumps.

Formed in New York City, the group consisted of the Americans John Phillips, Cass Elliot and Michelle Phillips and the Canadian Denny Doherty. Their sound was based on vocal harmonies arranged by John Phillips [2] – the songwriter and leader of the group – who adapted folk to the new beat style of the early 1960s.
