   1 giorno fa · In a survey made under Elizabeth it was stated that certain lands in Stainton were supposed to have belonged to a chapel which came into the hands of Edward VI at the dissolution of chantries. (fn. 106) The surveyors were of opinion that this must be a mistake, for the only chapel in Stainton was a chapel of ease which had no lands except the place on the lord's waste where it stood.

(fn. 32) Incidentally the story of Cumin shows that Durham was now a city of some size, with its houses and streets, in which the bishop's residence stood near the church and close to its western tower.
