Ive had the exact same experience. I've basically come to realize outlaw country is where it's at for me. Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson etc. Theres a few current guys I dont mind like Sturgill Simpson and Colter Wall, but the "bro country" or "stadium country" really put me off for the longest time.
