Director Henry Selick's previous two were James and the Giant Peach and The Nightmare Before Christmas (he wouldn't direct again after Monkeybone failed until 2009's Coraline). The film went through development hell and got a studio edit that strayed incredibly far from the original vision, which was much darker.
