I assumed incorrectly that most people only watched/enjoyed the first film, so I am glad to be corrected. It makes more sense why people seemed to care about him: if he was relevant enough in 2017 to gross more than the original (though inflation likely played a significant role), he wasn’t as washed-up as I’d believed.
