It takes its name from William Cubitt, its developer, who embanked the riverfront and laid out the principal streets during the 1840s and 1850s.

So late as 1763, Buckingham House enjoyed an uninterrupted prospect south and west to the river, there being only a few scattered cottages and the "Stag" Brewery between it and the Thames.

No. 41 stood at the corner of a short street, which was never developed, opposite Strattondale Street. It was a double-fronted house of three storeys which was occupied by doctors.
