Het is al tien jaar geleden dat in een ziekenhuis in Los Angeles “de eerste zwarte cowboy van Hollywood” was overleden. De man heette Herb Jeffries en werd 100 jaar oud. Op het moment dat hij stierf, had ik nog nooit van hem gehoord.

I like all of 1939-45, and pretty well anything with Ivie Anderson on it, and have an odd fondness for the slightly preposterous Flamingo with Herb Jeffries. (Ed Anderson who wrote the lyric is also in the film.) I like oddments like Tonk, the Ellington/Strayhorn piano duet.

Sam Lucas (1848–1916), pictured in 1902, was the first Black man to portray the role of Uncle Tom on stage and screen.
