Tra impressionismo ed espressionismo. Max Beckmann nacque a Lipsia il 12 febbraio 1884 da Antoinette Henriette Bertha Dübere e Carl Heinrich Christian Beckmann. Cominciò precocemente a disegnare e dipingere e nel 1899 entrò nell'Accademia di Weimar, dove restò fino al 1903.

Enciclopedia on line. Pittore (Lipsia 1884 - New York 1950). Studiò a Weimar, Parigi, Berlino, dove espose (1950) col gruppo della Secessione. Abbandonata la Germania nel 1937, fu successivamente a Parigi, Amsterdam (dal 1938) e, dal 1947, negli USA dove insegnò nell'univ. di St. Louis e quindi nel Brooklyn Museum di New York.
