4 giorni fa · From that point onwards there was a decline culminating with the loss of branch lines under the axe wielded by Dr Richard Beeching. Railways generally throughout the United Kingdom had been in decline for decades with 1,300 miles cut after World War I followed by a further 3,000 miles before Dr Beeching’s report in 1963.
In the 50s, Dr Beeching was put in charge of downsizing the railways to make them more profitable. Despite being deeply unpopular, it somewhat made sense as there were loads of duplicate lines, such as the small town of Wath having three separate lines and stations. But many lines were perhaps unnecessarily torn down.

4 giorni fa · It is unlikely Dr. Richard Beeching's name would appear on a locomotive; his participation on the Stedeford Committee in 1960 led to the British Government adopting his recommendation to close over one-third of the then-existing passenger rail network, the "Beeching Axe".
4 giorni fa · Dr. Richard Beeching, on the other hand, was never so honored. Appointed chairman of the newly formed British Railway Board in 1961, Beeching was the government face behind the countrywide dismantling of local rail service during the late ’60s.
