3 giorni fa · On May 19, 1863, Camp Butler sent the last of the prisoners away and the camp closed for the remainder of the war. During its 13 month exsistence, a total of 203 prisoners escaped, 339 were released upon an oath of allegiance, and 866 prisoners died there. Most of the dead Confederate soldiers are buried at Camp Butler.
