The problem I'm having is that, when my girlfriend informed me of this, I found myself extremely sad and disappointed. I have no idea why either. I wish I could just be supportive and happy, like I should be (??) but yet here I am crying at 1am. Does anybody have any advice for me regarding how to feel the correct emotions at the correct time?

You always fall back to the same keys and scales that you already know. You know exactly how a melody / arpeggio / bassline should be structured and are annoyed by entering it note by note to match the chords.
