Based on my recent reading (alas, mostly from Wikipedia and Reddit), my current understanding is that the god YHWY was once part of a Canaanite pantheon. Overtime, especially post-Babylonian exile, YHWY became the national god of Israel and Judea and evolved into the almighty capital-G God of a monotheistic faith.
