The Inclosure Act (fn. 3) inclosed 700 acres of common fields, marked as 'Thorpe Field' on the 1-in. Ordnance map, to the north of the village. The National Schools, built in 1848, were enlarged in 1901.

On her death, they remained in the King's hands until 1525, when Henry VIII granted them to his illegitimate son Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond and Somerset.
