1 giorno fa · THE EARLY STUARTS AND CIVIL WAR. Relations between town and gown, though still troubled, were, on the whole, better in this period than during the 16th century. The position of the University was strengthened by the grant in 1604 of the right to return members to Parliament, (fn. 1) and in 1605 by a new royal charter.

The university extension movement really began with some lectures delivered to audiences of both men and women in northern towns in 1867 by James Stuart, then a young fellow of Trinity and later professor of mechanism.
