Until recently, that enclosure was one of the excuses for the banishment of nuns from historical research, reducing them to a faceless, agentless mass.
4 giorni fa · At Elstow it was probably not obeyed at all; for in 1359 Bishop Gynwell (fn. 18) at his visitation reported that there had been 'too much wandering of the nuns out of the monastery.'. He had other complaints to make, which show for the first time what was then and afterwards the great snare into which this house fell.
4 giorni fa · By the end of 1861, the informative process was over, with Sallua finding the confessors, the abbess, Maria Luisa and several other nuns guilty of the charges. The treatment of the accused at this stage seems frustratingly weak, the confessors were still allowed to remain in their priestly offices, and the abbess and novice mistress were moved to other convents.

In Wiltshire adjoining Wilton it held 8½ hides at Washern, 4 hides at Ugford, and ½ hide at Ditchampton. Two hides, probably in Ditchampton, which a certain Toret had given to the abbey with his daughters, had in 1086 been taken by the Bishop of Bayeux.

Mildburh was a daughter of Merewalh, King of the Mercian sub-kingdom of Magonsaete, and Domne Eafe. She was the older sister of Saint Mildrith and Saint Mildgytha.
