    In the woodland garden, Michael Noble, Lord Glenkinglas (1913-1984) founded much of the present rhododendron collection from the 1930s to 1970s. Together with his wife, Lady Glenkinglas, he oversaw its transformation from inherited Victorian pinetum to an increasingly diverse and renowned arboretum, famous for its giant conifers (Gray 2000: 97-8).
