It could readily be garrisoned and defended, was the principal port for Ireland and the gateway to royalist north Wales, had road connexions with north-western and midland counties, and was close to the western route to Scotland.

Cromwell's invasion of 1649 was much larger and, with the civil war in England over, could be regularly reinforced and re-supplied. His nine-month military campaign was brief and effective, though it did not end the war in Ireland.

The first and second battles of Worcester, which respectively opened and closed the Civil War, took place at Powick Bridge. A fierce skirmish in which the Parliamentarians were utterly routed occurred on 23 September 1642 at Wick in the parish of St. John in Bedwardine.
