Oxford University is made up of more than 30 different colleges. Each one has its own dining hall, bar, common room and library, and lots of college groups and societies. All undergraduate students at Oxford become members of a particular college, and of the whole University.
The University of Oxford has 36 colleges, three societies, and four permanent private halls (PPHs) of religious foundation. The colleges and PPHs are autonomous self-governing corporations within the university. These colleges are not only houses of residence, but have substantial responsibility for teaching undergraduate students.
Oxford’s colleges, including those designated as societies and permanent private halls (PPHs), are small academic communities where graduate students meet academics and fellow students in a range of subjects from around the world.

The University of Oxford is made up of 43 constituent colleges, consisting of 36 semi-autonomous colleges, four permanent private halls and three societies (colleges that are departments of the university, without their own royal charter), and a range of academic departments which are organised into four divisions.
Each one has students, academic staff and administrative staff. Most colleges offer meals, libraries, accommodation, sports, events and other opportunities to enrich your Oxford experience. Our 43 colleges have much in common, but each has its own character and history.
