Many great freedom fighters, including His Highness Prince Louis Rwagasore, the great hero of the Independence of Burundi, sacrificed their lives to gain independence for their motherland.

Rwagasore, was an aristocrat and was said to be a democrat whose aim was to unite Burundi’s different ethnic groups – the Hutus, Tutsi and Gangwas – in true independence from Belgium, the colonial power since 1918.

In the wake of the elections, on 13 October, the 29-year-old Prince Rwagasore was assassinated , robbing Burundi of its most popular and well-known nationalist.
