Storia. Il gruppo si è formato nel 2004 dopo lo scioglimento di un'altra band chiamata Anatomy of a Ghost. Della prima formazione del gruppo facevano parte, tra gli altri, John Gourley e Zachary Scott Carothers, a cui si aggiunsero Nick Klein, Wesley Hubbard e Harvey Tumbleson. Questi ultimi tre già nel 2005 lasciarono il gruppo.

Gourley and Carothers teamed up with Wesley Hubbard, Nick Klein (former guitar tech for Anatomy of a Ghost) and Harvey Tumbleson, and formed Portugal. The Man. The band left Alaska and went to Portland with the intent of recording and touring.
It is fronted by singer/guitar player Ryan Sollee. The other members of the band are Willy Kunkle (bass guitar, vocals, percussion), Justin Baier (drums, backup vocals, percussion), [1] Ray Rude (drums, piano, clarinet, backup vocals, percussion), and Harvey Tumbleson ( mandolin, banjo, guitar, vocals, percussion).
