David "Fathead" Newman (February 24, 1933 – January 20, 2009) was an American jazz and rhythm-and-blues saxophonist, who made numerous recordings as a session musician and leader, but is best known for his work as a sideman on seminal 1950s and early 1960s recordings by Ray Charles.

In October 1972, he recorded Doug Sahm and Band in New York City with guest appearances by Bob Dylan, Dr. John, David "Fathead" Newman, Flaco Jimenez, David Bromberg and Kenny Kosek. The release garnered mixed reviews and sold poorly, reaching number 125 on Billboard ' s Top LPs & Tapes.

17 mag 2023 · Alongside Sir Douglas Quintet stalwarts Augie Meyers and Martin Fierro, there’s saxophonist David “Fathead” Newman and accordionist Flaco Jiminez, guitarist David Bromberg and Dr. John on keyboards. A great line up but pretty much eclipsed by the presence of Bob Dylan as part of the entourage.
