Cole is best known for his pioneering work on the genomics, evolution and virulence of pathogenic mycobacteria, especially those causing the human diseases tuberculosis (TB), leprosy and Buruli ulcer. Cole has supervised numerous students for MS and PhD degrees, and trained >50 postdoctoral fellows and clinicians.
Stewart Cole is a literary scholar working at the intersections of ecocriticism, animal studies, utopian/dystopian studies, and modern British and Irish literatures. His book The Poetics of Utopia: Shadows of Futurity in Yeats and Auden was published by Bloomsbury in the spring of 2023.

Professor Stewart Cole is an international authority in bacterial molecular-genetics and genomics. He has made outstanding contributions in several fields including: bacterial anaerobic electron transport; genome analysis of retroviruses and papillomaviruses; antibiotic resistance mechanisms; and the molecular microbiology of toxigenic clostridia.
