Eventually the Lithuanian ally Jabbarberdi (Tokhtamysh’s son) defeated Edige who fled to the Crimea and later died in a battle by the Yaik (Ural) River in Saraichyk (1419). As the Golden Horde fell once again into turmoil, Kazan and the Crimea used the opportunity to forge their own autonomy as well.

Uluğ Muhammad salì forse al potere dopo la morte di Jabbarberdi. Il suo principale rivale per il controllo dell'Orda fu suo cugino Dawlat Berdi, figlio di Jabbarberdi. Per gran parte del suo regno Uluğ Muhammad controllò Saraj, motivo per cui venne considerato il sovrano più legittimato a governare l'Orda.
