8 gen 2024 · Back in 2004, when her wedding to Crown Prince Frederik was imminent, she travelled to the East Lothian coast for a tipple with her ‘Tantie Margaret’. Mary’s father, John Dalgleish Donaldson (not a very Scottish name at all) hailed from the east coast fishing village before he moved to Tasmania, where Mary grew up – in the 1960s.
The Queen is the youngest daughter of John Dalgleish Donaldson, who was born in Scotland on 5 September 1941. He is a Professor of Applied Mathematics. The Queen's mother was Mrs. Henrietta Clark Donaldson, born 12 May 1942. The couple were married in Edinburgh, Scotland on 31 August 1963 and emigrated to Australia in November that year.
She is youngest of four children to Scottish parents, Henrietta (née Horne), an executive assistant to the vice-chancellor of the University of Tasmania, and John Dalgleish Donaldson, an academic, mathematics professor and member of the Clan MacDonald. Her paternal grandfather was Captain Peter Donaldson (1911–1978).
