In 1821 the University was renamed St Petersburg Imperial University. Initially, there were 3 faculties: History and Philology, Law and Philosophy, Physics and Mathematics. The system of faculties was borrowed from German universities. In 1855, the Faculty of Oriental Languages was added to them.
The Faculty of Philology and the Faculty of Oriental Studies share the nearby 18th-century Petrine Baroque building on Universitetskaya Embankment of the Bolshaya Neva, designed by Domenico Trezzini and originally built as the Palace of Peter II of Russia.
Graduates will acquire a fundamental knowledge of: the history and theory of literature; the history and current state of Russian; and state-of-the-art research methods. They will also have the skills of philological text analysis, and learn how to apply their knowledge in practical activities.
11 gen 2017 · The first course in the history of Ancient East was read at the Faculty of History and Philology, St. Petersburg State University. Almost all of Russia’s eminent Egyptologists and Assyriologists graduated from it.
Comparative Historical Linguistics. In 1863 a new Constitution of St. Petersburg Emperor University included the Department of Comparative Grammar of Indo-European Languages, to be twenty years later re-named as a Department of Comparative Linguistics and Sanscrit.
