Ourania is a 2006 novel written in French by French Nobel laureate J. M. G. Le Clézio . Plot summary. Le Clézio lived for fifteen years in a small village in Mexico called Valle de Bravo. Children invented an imaginary country and ideal, Ourania, and this book describes a near-Utopian society in Mexico.
It starts with Daniel Sillitoe who is living in France, as a child, when it is under German occupation during World War II. The war and his family situation make him long for an imaginary land that he calls Ourania (i.e. Urania), which he gets from a book of Greek legends his mother has.

1 gen 2005 · J.M.G. Le Clézio's Ourania is the first full-length novel I've ever read in the original French. I'm proud of the accomplishment, since I started taking French during college in order to read Proust in the original; it feels great to be progressing toward that goal.

When Le Clézio won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2008, the Anglophone press was almost unanimous in its surprise, primarily because they had never heard of him.
