Ispirato da un concerto dei Sex Pistols, tenutosi a Manchester, nel 1976 lo studente d'arte Mick Hucknall decise, all'età di 15 anni, di affrontare la carriera di esecutore musicale; nel giro di pochi anni si cimentò per la prima volta in questo ruolo, cantando in un gruppo punk chiamato The Frantic Elevators. Capendo che la sua potente voce poteva ancora essere fonte di grandi fortune, Hucknall assunse il suo primo manager, Elliot Rashman, che aveva grande entusiasmo per le potenzialità di Hucknall.
