Phillip Rhodes is a New Zealand-born baritone opera singer. Life. Rhodes was born in Flaxmere, a suburb of Hastings, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. He is of Māori descent, with a Pākehā mother and affiliating to the iwi Ngāti Awa and Ngāti Kahungunu on his father's side. [1] .

Biography. Phillip Rhodes was born in Forest City, North Carolina in 1940 and received degrees from Duke University and the Yale University School of Music. His principal teachers have been William Klenz, Iain Hamilton, Donald Martino, and Mel Powell.
Phillip Rhodes makes his house debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in performances of Carmen on 16 & 20 July 2019. He returns to the role of Escamillo, a role he recently sang at The Grange Festival receiving outstanding reviews.
