Bettina Edith Gorton, Lady Gorton (née Brown; 23 June 1915 – 2 October 1983) was an American-born Australian academic who was best known as the first wife of John Gorton, the 19th Prime Minister of Australia. She was born in Portland, Maine, met her husband while studying in France, and married in 1935.

16 feb 2024 · Bettina (Gorton) was intellectually bright but evasive and Sonia (McMahon) was uninvolved. “Margaret Whitlam is the first female resident of The Lodge who’ll go in with guns blazing.” This was at least a bit unfair to the former spouses. Dame Pattie Menzies was a woman of her time, long before women’s liberation.
After Bettina Gorton died of cancer on 2 October 1983, Gorton lived almost as a recluse for years. Then, on 24 July 1993, he married Nancy Home and was again seen at public occasions.
Sir John Grey Gorton GCMG AC CH (9 September 1911 – 19 May 2002) was an Australian politician, farmer and airman who served as the 19th prime minister of Australia from 1968 to 1971. He held office as the leader of the Liberal Party of Australia, having previously been a senator for Victoria.
