Mefisto in Onyx is a science fiction novella by American writer Harlan Ellison. The introduction and cover art were contributed by Frank Miller. Originally published in OMNI Magazine October 1993, then released as a hardcover in December 1993, Mefisto in Onyx was later included in Harlan Ellison's 1997 collection Slippage.

Mefisto in Onyx | WWEnd. Synopsis. Stoker and Locus Award winning and WFA, Hugo and Nebula Award nominated novella. It originally appeaerd in Omni, October 1993, and was published as a chapbook in the same year. The story can also be found in the anthology The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror 5 (1994), edited by Stephen Jones and Ramsey Campbell.
“Mefisto” is the story of a serial killer, who may or may not be the person we think he is, and of the District Attorney who prosecuted him, then fell in love with him and believes him to be innocent now, and, most importantly, with Rudy, who can jaunt (shades of Alfred Bester) into people’s minds (i.e., read them).
