Mary Pennington (Updike) Weatherall (January 26, 1930 - February 25, 2018) was a visual artist and the first wife of John Updike. Many of Updike's early characters were modeled after her, particularly in his short stories about the Maple family and his novel Couples.
25 feb 2018 · All of us at The John Updike Society were saddened to see the notice that Michael Updike just posted on Facebook that his mother, Mary Pennington (Updike) Weatherall, has died. Mary, John Updike’s first wife and the mother of his four children, was a supporter of the society from the very beginning.
6 mar 2018 · Mary Pennington was a fine arts major at Radcliffe College when she first encountered Updike, a Harvard College student. They met in a medieval art class at the Fogg Museum in fall 1951, and in the spring they took a drawing class from Boston artist Hyman Bloom.

5 mar 2018 · Mary Pennington Weatherall, 88, passed away peacefully in her home in Ipswich, on Feb. 25, 2018. She was a civil rights activist and former wife of the writer John Updike.
6 mar 2018 · The obituary for Mary Pennington (Updike) Weatherall published by the Local Ne.ws reports that a celebration of her life will be held at First Church in Ipswich, UCC, One Meetinghouse Green, on Saturday, May 5 at 2 p.m.
