Dopo lo scioglimento dei Roxy nel 1983, Manzanera si era intanto unito al progetto The Explorers con il suo compagno nei Roxy Andy Mackay; l'eponimo disco di esordio esce nel 1985. I due continueranno a collaborare negli anni successivi e nel 1988 esce il loro album Crack The Whip.

Vozero was Manzanera’s first solo album in 10 years. All the tracks were written by Manzanera, and in addition to Phil’s distinctive and eclectic guitar work, the album also prominently features Robert Wyatt, a guest spot for Andy Mackay on oboe, and a cast of other musicians and singers.
After the demise of Roxy Music in 1983 Phil teamed up with Andy Mackay and singer James Wraith to form the band The Explorers.
