Biography of Wardell Gray. The Early Years. Carl Wardell Gray was born on February 13, 1921 in Oklahoma City, the youngest of four children, to Eugene, from Georgia, and Carrie Gray (nee Maddison), from Alabama.
9 dic 2015 · Wardell Gray was one of the truly great, yet by now almost obscure, bebop tenor saxophonists. With a smooth mellow and consistent tone, he created a tenor style that veered from swing to bebop, a style that was elegant, sure-footed, mature and distinctive.
Wardell Gray played with nearly every major figure in jazz history, and his discography is a wonder to digest. Unfortunately, much of his recorded legacy remains unissued or out of print – which is particularly astonishing considering the quality of this body of work.
