The bulk of the records were transferred from Garland Junior College, upon its dissolution in 1976, to Simmons College. Additional records were transferred from time to time by Simmons College employees working in the Garland Center buildings.
Simmons absorbed Garland Junior College in 1976. (Wheelock College, a former member, merged with Boston University to become the Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development.) Simmons graduated its first African American student in 1914.
With this grant, the Garland Center customized training to employees to help increase workplace skills and wages. The training includes the categories of Business Technical, General Technical and non-technical.
