Lawrence Samuel Durrell (23 September 1884 – 16 April 1928) was a British engineer, best remembered as the father of novelist Lawrence Durrell and naturalist and writer Gerald Durrell.

Family members. The family was founded by Lawrence Samuel Durrell (1884–1928), an Anglo-Indian engineer, and his wife Louisa Durrell (1886–1964). Their children were: Lawrence Durrell (1912–1990), a diplomat and writer, best known for writing The Alexandria Quartet, in addition to travel literature.
Lawrence George Durrell was born on February 27, 1912, in Jullundur in northern India, near Tibet. His English father, Lawrence Samuel Durrell, and his Irish-English mother, Louisa Florence Dixie, had also been born in India. This mix of nationalities marked Durrell’s creative imagination.
Leben. Der Sohn von Louisa und Lawrence Samuel Durrell verbrachte seine ersten Lebensjahre in Indien. Mit elf Jahren wurde er zum Schulbesuch nach Canterbury (England) geschickt, wo er sich jedoch nie heimisch fühlte. Am 22. Januar 1935 heiratete Durrell Nancy Isobel Myers, seine erste Ehefrau.
