Ben presto, tutti presero a coltivare grano de oro (nei primi anni del 1800 vi era persino una legge che prescriveva a ogni famiglia di Ticos di coltivare il caffè nel cortile), che nel 1829 era già diventato il principale produttore di reddito della nazione.
