During the reign of Ælfred the Great at the latest, a genealogy was composed tracing his father Æthelwulf back to Cerdic, legendary first king of the West Saxons, and further to Adam. The fabricated nature of the pre-Cerdic part of the pedigree was demonstrated by Sisam [Sisam (1953), 158-165].
