The April 1977 sessions featured Crazy Horse augmented by an ad hoc grouping dubbed "The Bullets": pedal steel guitarist and longtime Young collaborator Ben Keith, violinist Carole Mayedo, and backing vocalists Linda Ronstadt and Nicolette Larson.
Neil Young però non si decide a portare avanti il progetto, e nella primavera del 1977 inizia improvvisamente a comporre una gran quantità di canzoni country, e per cantarle poi in duetto, interpella anche Linda Ronstadt (che a sua volta consiglia anche l'impiego di Nicolette Larson).
