With its origins in the formation of Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts in 1843, NAS has been in operation on the historic Darlinghurst Gaol site in East Sydney in various forms since 1922 and was formerly part of East Sydney Technical College, known as East Sydney Tech.
The National Art School moved into the former gaol buildings in 1922, as part of Sydney Technical College, later East Sydney Technical College. The School gained autonomy as an educational institution in 1996, and became the sole occupant of the Darlinghurst site in 2005.

The Archive Collection contains over 700 items that are divided thematically into two broad categories, namely Darlinghurst Gaol and the National Art School, which includes all its former iterations such as TAFE and the East Sydney Technical College.
Then in 1922, most of the cells were removed and the National Art School moved onto the site as part of East Sydney Technical College. Today, NAS provides tertiary-level courses offering specialised study in studio arts across various disciplines.
In 1922, the Department of Art was moved from Ultimo to the Darlinghurst Gaol site (then called East Sydney Technical College), occupying five buildings alongside other departments from Sydney Technical College, such as women's handicrafts, the sanitation and hygiene school, the sheep and wool school and the domestic science school.

The site was converted to the East Sydney Technical College in the 1920s and became independent of TAFE in 1999. The campus is a locally listed heritage item under the City of Sydney’s Local Environmental Plan.
