25 ago 2003 · The second track provides a wonderful juxtaposition of low-end timbres, Alex Blake playing his intimate, richly-resonant bass (with slaps and pinches) alongside Abdellah El Gourd's higher-edged hag'houge, a three-stringed bass lute whose pitch and repetitive rhythmic emphasis complements the Panamanian's voice nicely.
25 ago 2003 · The domestic release of Spirit! The Power of Music begins to correct that oversight. Recorded live in 1999 with longtime collaborators Alex Blake, Benny Powell, Talib Kibwe, and Neil Clarke, the African Rhythm Quartet shares the stage with Gnawa Musicians of Marrakech and Tanger.
O’s Notes: The African Rhythms Quartet is Alex Blake (b), Benny Powell (tb), Talib Kibwe (as, fl), Neil Clarke (percussion) and Weston on piano. Vocals come from either the Gnawa Musicians of Marrakech or Tanger. While you may not be able to understand the African language, you will comprehend the message.
