Oriel College (/ ˈ ɔː r i əl /) is a constituent college of the University of Oxford in Oxford, England. Located in Oriel Square, the college has the distinction of being the oldest royal foundation in Oxford (a title formerly claimed by University College, whose claim of being founded by King Alfred is no longer promoted).
Oriel was the first college to be founded by a king back in 1326. We offer all our undergraduates accommodation throughout their studies, and highly-subsidised formal dinners most evenings shape our rhythm of life together.
L'Oriel College (nome completo: The Provost and Scholars of the House of the Blessed Mary the Virgin in Oxford, commonly called Oriel College, of the Foundation of Edward the Second of famous memory, sometime King of England) è un college dell'Università di Oxford, il quinto più antico.
Oriel College has beautiful historic buildings dating from the 14th to the 21st Century. Oriel attaches great importance to the academic and social integration of graduates into the life of the college.
Oriel was the fifth college to be founded at Oxford. It began with a Provost and just 10 Fellows, all graduates, who studied Theology, Law and Medicine. The college prospered and grew. Three Provosts went on to become Bishops. Life was not entirely peaceful, though.
